Kuala Lumpur is a milieu of many cultures, each with their own history and religious practices, and these factors are reflected in the major attractions. You really have to visit KL to fully appreciate and understand the multi-ethnic character of this fascinating country. Besides the attractions described below, there are numerous modern theme parks that, though extremely well executed and even unique in some way, are more uniformly international in character.
Petronas Towers
The 88-story Petronas Twin Towers are the world’s tallest twin structures. Inspired by Islamic architecture, this lustrous structure is 452 meters (1480 feet) tall. It contains offices, conference halls, and upscale shopping, plus it boasts a 20 hectare (50 acre) park. The towers are joined at the 41st and 42nd floors by a double-deck bridge, making it unique among the world’s tallest skyscrapers.
Menara KL Tower
At 421 meters (1380 feet) above the Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve, this tower is presently the world’s fifth tallest structure. From the topside viewing deck you have spectacular views of the city and surrounding countryside. There is a rotating restaurant at the top. Besides a tourist attraction, it is an important communications center.
Chinatown
A bustling district of KL that never sleeps, this is a colorful place to see the lively Chinese sector’s shops and other activities, and also a great place to hunt for bargains. The nighttime main market area, Petaling Street, has hundreds of stalls selling all kinds of goods at low prices, but haggling to lower the price further is expected, so give it a try.
Batu Caves
Batu Caves penetrate a limestone hill, and is one of KL’s most frequented tourist destinations. There are 3 major caves, and Cathedral Cave has a 100 meter (330 foot) arched ceiling that houses several Hindu shrines. The Hindu temple artifacts are about 100 years old and are an important religious landmark for Hindus. It is about 11 kilometers (7 miles) north of KL.
Kuala Lumpur Bird Park
This Bird Park is said to be one of the largest in the world, covering 20 hectares (50 acres). There are separated sections such as Hornbill Park, Flamingo Pond, World of Parrots and a free-flight walk-about aviary that contains over 3,000 birds. Delight in the beauty of these fantastic creatures.
Central Market
Once just a wet market, it now houses a variety of traders offering traditional goods like batik, carvings, souvenirs, sculptures, clothes and much more. The different ethnic groups are purposely segregated so that visitors can more clearly see and appreciate the cultural differences of the ethnic groups in Malaysia.
