Borneo can be found in the South China Sea and is the third largest island in the world. It is also home to an array of landscape features such as mountains, rivers, gorges, caves and the Borneo rainforest. All of these areas, as well as the beaches themselves, offer immense opportunity for family-orientated adventure.

You need at least two weeks to truly experience what this beautiful island has to offer, and on a typical family adventure holiday in Borneo you can expect to cover a wide range of activities.

Snorkelling is by far the best way to explore the coral reef that sits just off the coast of Borneo and this is usually accompanied by a RIB ride.

You can expect to have a full day of mountain biking, exploring the area around Kota Kinabalu, and should be prepared to get muddy as some of the routes may take you through parts of the rainforest. Rock climbing will also be on the agenda, with a morning session of practice on an indoor wall and the chance to head outside and even try Mount Kinabalu.

A walk through the stunning rainforest discovery centre will also be on offer as well as a visit to the Gomantong Caves. You will even get the chance to spend a night on the edge of the secondary jungle of Kampung Bilit. There will be a rainforest boat trip where you may even get to see the Borneo pygmy elephant. Jungle rafting and diving are also possible.

All in all, an adventure trip to Borneo is something you will remember for the rest of your life.

Whether you are backpacking across the region, or simply visiting one of the area’s bustling cities, there is something for everyone.

If you are backpacking in SEA then flying into Singapore’s Changi Airport is great way to start your journey. Going to Asia can be a bit intimidating at first to westerners, as it can be very different to Europe or the US.

However, Singapore is a good transitional place to get you used to the way of life in SEA and there is plenty to see and do. The city is also an excellent place to shop with Orchard Road being a prime destination for shoppers with malls as far as the eye can see.If you enjoy Asian food then you have come to the right place.

Try out the hawker centres where you can enjoy all the local delicacies for great value, with most main dishes only costing a couple of pounds. But if you still long for the treats of back home, there are plenty of western style food outlets as well.

Once you have sampled the delights of Singapore you will be ready for Malaysia and a trip to Kuala Lumpur is well worth while.

The city has more of the vibe of a busy Asian city but still has the western-like infrastructure that makes it accessible to tourists.

Made famous by a number of films, including Entrapment, the Petronas Twin Towers are an impressive sight to behold and you can gain a brilliant view of the city, especially when it’s all lit up after the sun goes down.

Head further north and you will come into the most popular destination in SEA, the Kingdom of Thailand.

What makes this country such a lure to tourists is the fact it really does have something for everyone.

Whether you want to see beautiful jungle landscapes, sit on pristine beaches with warm crystal clear waters, or barter and haggle in the streets of Bangkok then Thailand is the destination for you.

Known for its extravagant shopping malls like the Starhill Gallery and Pavillion KL, and colorful street markets like those found in Chinatown and Little India. Kuala Lumpur is a good place to purchase reasonably-priced clothing, electronic equipment, local arts and crafts items as well as designer brands, fashion accessories and jewellery.

Bukit Bintang Shopping

Good samples of KL’s major shopping centers are found along Jalan Bukit Bintang, an area known as KL’s ultimate shopping district. The variety is extensive and prices cover a broad spectrum. You can’t miss the bright green color of Lot 10, where you’ll find specialty shops, restaurants and an Isetan supermarket and department store. For electronics and computers, Low Yat Plaza has everything for the gadget lover, from cameras to computers, at very competitive prices.

KLCC Suria Mall

A trendy mall at the base of the Petronas Twin Towers. It has three sections, one for designer and branded goods, and two sections where you’ll find more economical labels like Marks and Spencers, Esprit, Zara and Levi’s. The Mall is connected to the KLCC Monorail station.

Petaling Street and Chinatown

This clean and spacious complex has small stalls, with aspiring artists and shops packed with goods. Here you’ll find items not available in the malls like a Kelantan Kite, beaded silver jewellery, embroidered Songkets, Chinese jewellery boxes, Malaysian dresses and cheongsams and various sculptures. It is a great place to hunt for unique souvenirs.

Pudu Market and Jalan Pasar Market

Here you can see how traditional perishable foods are traded. There are fruits and vegetables, spices seafood, live frogs and other fresh meats, to name a few items. Open from early morning until 2 pm. Wear shoes that you don’t mind getting wet and soiled.

An interesting midnight bazaar is found in the heart of KL, at Jalan Jelatek off Jalan Ampang, near the Petronas Twin Towers. It opens at 9 pm and closes around 2 am. It proves that KL never sleeps.

Kuala Lumpur defies categorization as a conservative Muslim country, since the non-Muslim population is significantly large, and this is reflected in the rich and creative nightlife, quite unlike the hypocritical offerings in many other Muslim countries. Step out of you hotel on any evening on a Friday or Saturday night and you will instantly feel the life and throb of a vibrant nightlife that often remains energetic until 3 the next morning. It seems that KL is where exotic dance styles like Latin or Bhangra are in demand. Kuala Lumpur is a good rival for Singapore and Bangkok as a place to hit the town. So, it IS possible to have fun in an Islamic country. See for yourself.

The central area is called KLCC, Kuala Lumpur Civic Center, and by day it is the center of Malaysia’s finance, trade and commerce. However, when night falls, as it does at essentially the same time all year long, KLCC is transformed into a hotbed of entertainment and late-night fun. There are clubs, bars and pubs scattered throughout KLCC, mostly along Jalan Ampang, Jalan P. Ramlee and Jalan Sultan Ismail. This is a good area to start your exploration of KL nightlife, though many other areas have good attractions as well.

Beach Club Café

This bar has a beachside theme and is popular with international tourists and expats. It has live performances and DJs that fill the dance floor, and is a reputedly the best pickup spot.

Passion

Passion’s intimate atmosphere attracts a trendy crowd into its stylish realm where a state-of-the-art audiovisual system will stimulate you. There is also a chill-out balcony and even oversized beds where you can hold more private conversations.

Aloha Club. Bistro & VIP Lounge

This club has an Hawaiian theme, with beach huts lining outside its front and inside for its dance club, bistro and an exclusive VIP lounge.

Sky Bar

Surrounded by exhilarating views of the nighttime city skyline, the Sky Bar is the city’s hippest bar with its contemporary, chic décor and chill-out atmosphere.

Zouk & Velvet Underground

Perhaps one of the most well known nightclubs in KLCC, Zouk has four different dance rooms, each with different styles of music, and regular appearances of international deejays. Velvet Underground is Zouk’s elite sister club sensuously classy with its velvet-lined walls.

Glass Lounge in the Crowne Mutiara Hotel

This is a more relaxed place for those who want a place to meet and chat while enjoying live bands or soothing piano music. It has an extensive beverage menu and super gourmet sandwiches

12 SI at 12 Jalan Sultan Ismail

Four clubs in one, Atmosphere, Bliss, Bar Fly and Gerai. Among these, there is something for everyone and a unique experience to be sure. It claims to offer an energy that is both raw and highly polished at the same time.

Cuisines represented include Chinese, Indian and Malay, but there are also Peranakan Nyonya restaurants, which is a unique fusion of Chinese and Malay cooking dating back to early Chinese traders who settled in Malacca and Penang and who assimilated many elements of Malay culture. Many of KL’s neighborhoods have a good sampling of restaurants, all close by each other.
Sagar

Sagar specializes in superb North Indian food. Their butter chicken is a KL legend, and they have many fresh seafood selections. It is highly rated.

CoChine Bistro & Alfresco

CoChine serves very tasteful Vietnamese and Lao food in classy surroundings decorated with Khmer carvings.

Lafitte Restaurant

Lafite serves an exquisite selection of European cuisine in a luxurious atmosphere. It provides an intimate, cozy dining experience, and it’s fair to say, for a stiff price.

Shangari-La Hotel, 11, Jalan Sultan Ismail, +60-3-2074-3900

Bombay Palace

Perhaps the best Indian restaurant in KL, Bombay Palace has a reputation of serving a wide variety of authentic Indian cosine. Service and ambience is first class.

215 Jalan Tun Razak, +60-3-2145-4241

Li Yen

Suria KLCC, Shop 420-421, Level 4, +60-3-2026-2297

Kelantan Delights

This is another of the great Malay restaurants in KL, located in the Twin Towers. It used to be a street stall, but has moved upscale, and for good reason, since many of its specialties are legend among KL residents.

You really have to visit KL to fully appreciate and understand the multi-ethnic character of this fascinating country. Besides the attractions described below, there are numerous modern theme parks that, though extremely well executed and even unique in some way, are more uniformly international in character.

Petronas Towers

The 88-story Petronas Twin Towers are the world’s tallest twin structures. Inspired by Islamic architecture, this lustrous structure is 452 meters (1480 feet) tall. It contains offices, conference halls, and upscale shopping, plus it boasts a 20 hectare (50 acre) park. The towers are joined at the 41st and 42nd floors by a double-deck bridge, making it unique among the world’s tallest skyscrapers.

Menara KL Tower

At 421 meters (1380 feet) above the Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve, this tower is presently the world’s fifth tallest structure. From the topside viewing deck you have spectacular views of the city and surrounding countryside. There is a rotating restaurant at the top. Besides a tourist attraction, it is an important communications center.

Chinatown

A bustling district of KL that never sleeps, this is a colorful place to see the lively Chinese sector’s shops and other activities, and also a great place to hunt for bargains. The nighttime main market area, Petaling Street, has hundreds of stalls selling all kinds of goods at low prices, but haggling to lower the price further is expected, so give it a try.

Batu Caves

Batu Caves penetrate a limestone hill, and is one of KL’s most frequented tourist destinations. There are 3 major caves, and Cathedral Cave has a 100 meter (330 foot) arched ceiling that houses several Hindu shrines. The Hindu temple artifacts are about 100 years old and are an important religious landmark for Hindus. It is about 11 kilometers (7 miles) north of KL.

Kuala Lumpur Bird Park

This Bird Park is said to be one of the largest in the world, covering 20 hectares (50 acres). There are separated sections such as Hornbill Park, Flamingo Pond, World of Parrots and a free-flight walk-about aviary that contains over 3,000 birds. Delight in the beauty of these fantastic creatures.

Central Market

Once just a wet market, it now houses a variety of traders offering traditional goods like batik, carvings, souvenirs, sculptures, clothes and much more. The different ethnic groups are purposely segregated so that visitors can more clearly see and appreciate the cultural differences of the ethnic groups in Malaysia.
