Kuala Lumpur Shopping
Kuala Lumpur is a well-known international shopping destination, with goods for everybody’s budget, rich and poor. Known for its extravagant shopping malls like the Starhill Gallery and Pavillion KL, and colorful street markets like those found in Chinatown and Little India. Kuala Lumpur is a good place to purchase reasonably-priced clothing, electronic equipment, local arts and crafts items as well as designer brands, fashion accessories and jewellery.
Bukit Bintang Shopping
Good samples of KL’s major shopping centers are found along Jalan Bukit Bintang, an area known as KL’s ultimate shopping district. The variety is extensive and prices cover a broad spectrum. You can’t miss the bright green color of Lot 10, where you’ll find specialty shops, restaurants and an Isetan supermarket and department store. For electronics and computers, Low Yat Plaza has everything for the gadget lover, from cameras to computers, at very competitive prices.
KLCC Suria Mall
A trendy mall at the base of the Petronas Twin Towers. It has three sections, one for designer and branded goods, and two sections where you’ll find more economical labels like Marks and Spencers, Esprit, Zara and Levi’s. The Mall is connected to the KLCC Monorail station.
Petaling Street and Chinatown
This is the place for replicas (read: imitations) of name brand accessories, handbags, watches, clothing and cosmetics. There are many other gifts and handicrafts to be seen, plus fruits, local snacks and other foods. Copies of DVDs and CDs are plentiful.
Pasar Seni and Central Market
Adjacent to Petaling Street, this market has local arts, handicrafts, ethnic jewellery, accessories, clothing, and home decor items. This clean and spacious complex has small stalls, with aspiring artists and shops packed with goods. Here you’ll find items not available in the malls like a Kelantan Kite, beaded silver jewellery, embroidered Songkets, Chinese jewellery boxes, Malaysian dresses and cheongsams and various sculptures. It is a great place to hunt for unique souvenirs.
Pudu Market and Jalan Pasar Market
Here you can see how traditional perishable foods are traded. There are fruits and vegetables, spices seafood, live frogs and other fresh meats, to name a few items. Open from early morning until 2 pm. Wear shoes that you don’t mind getting wet and soiled.
An interesting midnight bazaar is found in the heart of KL, at Jalan Jelatek off Jalan Ampang, near the Petronas Twin Towers. It opens at 9 pm and closes around 2 am. It proves that KL never sleeps.
